ELIGIBILITY:
This contest is open to any native speaker of Vietnamese currently enrolled full-time in a high school, college, or university in Vietnam.
Contestants must be Vietnamese citizens.
Overseas entries will not be accepted.
ESSAY TOPIC

Iconic American author Mark Twain once said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” What kind of “views” do you think you would “acquire” from traveling to the United States? What would you hope to learn from your trip?

HOW TO ENTER

Answer the essay contest question in an essay of no more than 1,000 words.
Include your full name, email address, phone number, school, and academic year.
Submit your essay by filling in the form below

JUDGING CRITERIA

Essays will be judged on relevance to the theme of the contest, clarity of the thesis, originality and creativity, rhetorical sophistication, and technical quality of the writing, including organization, grammar, syntax, and form.

Your essay should contain the following:
An introduction, which introduces the topic and informs the reader of the contents of the body. The point is to present your idea in a clear fashion so that the reader can easily identify what the rest of your essay will be about.
A body, including short paragraphs that explain each of your points in some details.
A conclusion, which succinctly summarizes your key points.
Your essay will be disqualified if you plagiarize—that is, use someone else’s statements or ideas as your own without attribution.

Deadline for submission of essays: August 15, 2014, 11:59 p.m.

PRIZE DETAILS

The top 3 winners will have a chance to read their essays at the ceremony, receive framed and signed certificates, and can report winning this prestigious award on their CV or résumé.
