Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Members Lead Largest Day of Youth Service in ASEAN on Dec. 3

Ho Chi Minh City, Nov. 30, 2016 — Members of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) will mark the 3rd anniversary of YSEALI on December 3 by organizing the largest day of youth-led community projects across ASEAN.

More than 100 teams of YSEALI members will hold community activities in all 10 ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). This YSEALI YOUnified celebration encourages young people to be civically engaged and demonstrates the power of youth to develop solutions to pressing local, national, and regional issues.

With the motto “never too young to lead,” in Vietnam 16 YSEALI teams in 9 cities and provinces will join hands throughout the country to perform community services activities, promote volunteerism and showcase the power of youth in bringing positive change. This will be the most far-reaching YSEALI event in Vietnam, which aims to attract more than 1,000 participants.

Interested journalists are invited to attend all activities of YSEALI YOUnified and should contact the organizers listed on the next sheet for details about timing and exact locations.

Journalists wishing to attend programs at the U.S. Consulate should register with Mr. Dinh Dai Nghia, U.S. Consulate General Information Assistant, via email (DinhND@state.gov). The deadline to register is December 1, 2016.

Launched in 2013, the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is the U.S. government’s signature program to strengthen partnerships with emerging leaders in Southeast Asia; to expand their skills as effective civic, economic, and non-governmental leaders in the region; and to encourage them to work together across borders to solve regional challenges.

YSEALI includes all ASEAN member countries (Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) and is open to young people ages 18-35. Responding to priorities from youth in the ASEAN region, YSEALI programs focus on four themes:

Economic development and entrepreneurship
Environmental protection
Education
Civic engagement
YSEALI opportunities include professional and academic exchanges to the United States, regional workshops for networking and skills development, social media engagement, and a grant competition to support emerging leaders’ efforts to address regional issues.
